Emulsion paints are a type of paint that contains water-dissolved binder, filler and pigment particles and generally used indoor applications. Water-based emulsion paints contain fillers and polymers (latex) in water.
Emulsion paints are a type of paint in which oil, varnish and synthetic resin form a suspension in the water environment. Emulsion paints with paste consistency are used by diluting them. Emulsion paints are mainly used on interior walls and ceilings.
Emulsion paints usually have a light structure. This type of paint has many different finishes, such as gloss, matt and satin. Because emulsion paints are water-based, they are easier to clean compared to oil-based paints. Emulsion paints dry much more easier than oil-based paints. Emulsion paints become water resistant after drying.
Emulsion paints have polymers with high molecular weight. The most well-known high molecular weight polymer is polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl acetate+ styrene+ butadiene copolymer. If the polymer particles are small, the brightness increases together with water resistance.
Emulsion paints are formed by alkyd resin emulsion.
Advantages of Emulsion Paints
Emulsion paints have many advantages.
Emulsion paints do not smell during application and drying. Therefore, a condition such as paint poisoning is not encountered when painting and afterward.
Emulsion paints have fire and explosion safety.
Low wear resistance.
Emulsion paints are also resistant to corrosive environments.
Emulsion paints can be applied easily.
Its moisture resistance is high.
It is compatible with most surfaces.
It has a long shelf life.
Disadvantages of Emulsion Paints
Emulsion paints are not suitable for outdoor applications. At low temperatures cracks may occur on emulsion painted surfaces. It is mainly used in interior and ceilings.
Emulsion paints are more expensive than oil-based paints. But it is still a preferred type of paint for ease of use and for many other reasons.
Emulsion paints are made more durable with some vinyl and acrylic resins.
Types of Emulsion Paints
Polyvinyl acetate: this composition is an emulsion of polyvinyl acetate, which is white, dense and homogeneous. Plasticizers and stabilizers can be added to polyvinyl acetate emulsion. After application to the surface, the water moves away from the emulsion and the remaining substances get hardened. After drying, a porous and semi-matte surface is obtained.
Acrylic: the basic components of acrylic paints can be defined as water-dispersion mixture and polyacrylates. These paints are suitable for rooms with high humidity and they are washable and increase moisture resistance. It prevents mold and fungus formation. It has elasticity. It is resistant to UV rays.
Latex paints: these are emulsion paints containing latex. The main feature of latex-containing compositions is their high moisture resistance.
