For the paints or varnish to achieve the desired performance, they should be supported by a number of chemical components. Alkyd resins are used to reinforce them with chemical components. The resins provide a significant part of the physical and chemical properties of the paint as the binders in its structure. Alkyd-based resins add a variety of features to paint and varnishes.
Alkyd resin is a type of polyester synthetic resin modified with a variety of oil or oil acid and produced with the polycondensation of polyhydric alcohol and dibasic acids. Alkyd resin is modified to improve the performance of paints and varnishes. The polyester part of the alkyd resin helps with the stiffness of the resin, and the oil and oil acid part of it helps with flexibility, adhesion and resolution with solvents. Alkyd resin produces other coating film properties such as physical and chemical resistance and adhesion, which directly affects film formation in paint and varnish systems.
The preferred binder type for alkyd paints is alkyd resin. Approximately 2000 thousand tons of alkyd resins are obtained every year in the world.
Properties Alkyd Resin
Alkyd resins add a variety of features to paint and varnishes. The brightness and colour of the product are protected in alkyd resin mixtures.
In alkyd resin mixtures, the product’s water resistance increases and it also gains the ability to be erasable.
While the product’s water resistance increases, the elastic properties are also protected in the alkyd resin mixtures. Alkyd resin also provides resistance against heat.
Areas of Usage for Alkyd Resin
Alkyd resins are used in many areas. Alkyd resin is used in paint and varnish of furniture, decorative metal paints, air-dried and oven-dried industrial paint and varnish production, undercoat paints, marine paints, production of marine varnishes.
Classification of Alkyds
Depending on the amount of oil acid contained in the Alkyds, they can be categorized as follows;
Low (short)-oil alkyds
Medium-oil alkyds
High-oil alkyds
Low (short) oil Alkyds
Alkyds with a rate of oil acid in their varnish lower than 45% are known as low-oil alkyds. Low-oil alkyds are much denser than high-oil alkyds.
Medium-oil Alkyds
Medium-oil alkyds are the alkyd type with an oil acid rate between 45-55% in their alkyd resin. Medium oil alkyds are used for decorative paint, marine and machine paint and auto repair paint. They are produced at a lower rate compared to other types. Medium-oil alkyds can be applied with a roll or brush.
High-oil Alkyds
Alkyds with a rate of oil acid in their varnish higher than 55% are known as high-oil alkyds. Paints known as oil paints are obtained from high oil alkyds. High-oil alkyds are frequently used in Construction, decoration, and air-dried paint systems.
