Water is one of the most important elements that make the structures durable. The water exposed by structures erodes the carrier systems and causes damage. This condition is one of the main factors that shorten the life of the structures. In addition, large structures may be damaged due to movements of earth crust. Therefore, it is very important to pay attention to waterproofing in structures.
What Is Waterproofing?
Waterproofing precipitation water is to make structures water resistant or waterproof against moisture or humidity caused by the ground and all sources of water. Thanks to waterproofing works, the structure provides high resistance against water and it is not affected by water.
In order to prevent the passage of water through surfaces, a tight barrier is created on the surfaces of foundations, roofs, walls and other building materials. Thanks to waterproofing, building surfaces are made strong with high water resistance or completely converted into waterproof structures.
Waterproofing Materials
Waterproofing materials vary according to the type of surface to be applied.
Cement-Based Waterproofing Materials
Cement-based waterproofing is the easiest and most seamless waterproofing method. This method is used in internal areas such as bathrooms and toilets. These insulation materials with strong adhesion resistance give effective results on concrete and wall surfaces. Cement-based waterproofing materials can be applied in indoor and outdoor areas, wet floors, retaining walls, water tanks and swimming pools, elevators, metro stations and tunnels.
Bituminous Coating Waterproofing Materials
Bituminous coating is the material used for waterproofing and flexible protective coating. Bituminous coatings are available in two or one component. The areas where bituminous coatings are most commonly used are the areas below the screed. It acts as a strong protective coating and waterproofing material, especially on surfaces such as concrete foundations.
Polyurethane Based Waterproofing Materials
It can be applied by means of spraying on the concrete surface through a brush roller. Polyurethane based waterproofing materials give very good results. It can be used in external basic insulation in buildings, roof insulation in terraces, gardens and parking lots. There are two types of these materials as UV resistant and non-resistant. It is necessary to apply a primer to the surface before using polyurethane-based materials.
Acrylic Based Waterproofing Materials
Acrylic-based materials have a homogeneous mixture. They can be applied to the concrete surface with a roller brush or through spraying. Before applying acrylic-based insulation material, the primer layer should be removed. The insulation material consisting of acrylic material has elasticity. Acrylic-based waterproofing materials are used in roofs and terraces, under-foundation structures, basements, bridge decks, wet volumes. Acrylic-based waterproofing materials protect roofs, terraces and balconies from leaks and negative effects of UV rays.
